Why Yellow Not Pink

Everything started a while ago, around 2009. Rosie and Diego traveled to Diego's hometown in Mexico, a town filled with flowers, in particular bougainvilleas—a hot pink sort of flower that blooms all year round in that part of Mexico. That place is where Rosie fell in love: not with Diego (to be fair to Diego, she was already in love with him) and not with the beautiful pink flowers, but with the authentic corn tortillas, masa, and other corn masa foods, especially the tortillas.

Inspired by this, Rosie and Diego decided it was time to bring authentic corn tortillas to Aotearoa and share with everyone the wonders of food made from masa de maíz (corn dough). Unfortunately, the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes had other plans, so they had children instead!

Fast forward to 2023, and Rosie, Diego, and their two daughters decided to try again, this time as a family business.

As you can tell, we like pink and we want to see it every day, but what we like more is a freshly made batch of masa, which is commonly yellow. So, Yellow Not Pink is a reminder to focus on the corn and enjoy the hints of pink that warm up our lives.

We hope to be able to share our passion for masa products with as many people in New Zealand as possible. Above all, we want people to take this humble ingredient and make it their own. We want it to be as popular as bread, and just as easy to get. Yellow Not Pink corn masa and tortillas are made the traditional way by nixtamalization, and so are authentic, delicious, and naturally gluten-free and vegan. So, get experimenting and make your own creations!

A Note from Diego:

Mexican pink is a wonderful colour, but we should all remember to focus on the corn (in NZ mostly shades of yellow)—that is what really matters.

Bougainvillea

Not endemic to Mexico but found in most warm weather countries around the world, it grows in several different colours including yellow!
