How to use Tortillas

Get Creative with Tortillas!

So, you've got your delicious tortillas, now what? The possibilities are endless! Here are some of our family favourites and classic ideas to get you started:

Tacos!

A taco is almost any food wrapped or rolled in a tortilla! Yep, a burrito is technically a style of taco. 😉 The key is to keep your tortillas hot and steaming until just before you eat them.

Our Family Favourites:

  • Slow-cooked pork with spring onion and coriander.

  • Fish from the local fish 'n' chip shop with coleslaw and diced tomato & onion.

  • Fried sweet corn kernels, halloumi cheese, and avocado.

  • Any sort of leftovers (e.g., roast veggies with salad).

Pro Tip: Add a little mayo or your favourite sauce/salsa (like BBQ, chipotle, chile, pico de gallo, or guacamole) and, if you like, a sprinkle of fresh coriander. Don't forget salt and pepper!

Quesadillas

A quesadilla is a tortilla folded over with a filling on the inside, often cheese with or without meat or veggies.

How to make them: Heat a pan (with a little oil if you like). Place your tortilla in the pan for about 10 seconds until soft. Put your filling on half the tortilla, then fold it over and cook until heated through and the cheese (or any other filling) is hot and melty.

Fun Fact: You can also add another tortilla on top of the filling instead of folding it. Technically, this is now a sincronizada, but we won't get too tied up on the details!

Our Family Favourites:

  • Plain mozzarella cheese, with a bit of oil in the pan.

  • Leftover dinner (tofu, meat, cheese, stirfry, bacon....).

  • Cheese blend (e.g., Edam and mozzarella) with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream on top.

Handy Tip: Tortilla not folding easily? Try wetting it quickly under the tap before heating, and maybe a little oil in the pan. You can also make these easily in a sandwich press!

Tiritas (Little Strips)

This translates as "little strips" in English, and they're fantastic on soup or like croutons on a salad.

How to make them: Cut tortillas into strips, fry them with some oil and salt, and serve! Our favourites are on top of pumpkin soup with coriander, or added to a fresh green salad.

More Tortilla Adventures!

Beyond our favourites, here are some classic ways to use corn tortillas:

  • Taco ideas: Fill with meat, beans, or veggies. Try al pastor, carnitas, fish, or even breakfast tacos.

  • Quesadillas: Add cheese and other fillings like mushrooms, kimchi, "flor de calabaza", fold, and grill.

  • Enchiladas: Roll tortillas with filling, cover in sauce, and bake.

  • Taquitos / Flautas: Roll with chicken or beef and fry until crispy (use a toothpick to hold closed while frying).

  • Chilaquiles: Cut tortillas into pieces, fry, then simmer in a home made salsa and top with egg or poached chicken.

  • Tostadas: Bake or fry tortillas until crispy, then layer refried beans or hummus, top with meat or tofu, lettuce or cole slaw, and finish off with your favourite garnishing like cheese, toasted seeds, picked onions.... options are endless

  • Nachos: Cut into triangles, bake or fry, and top with melted cheese, cooked beans, and salsa or whatever you fancy.

  • Picky Kids Special Edition: spread some sour cream or cream cheese on a tostada or warm tortilla.... that will do to start with. Getting them to prepare their own generally opens up their will to try new toppings.
